The Fertile Surface of the Earth—Penghu's Wuteh Intertidal Zone

This is an attempt to create a topographical fable blending the humanities and ecological science. The work uses research hypotheses and hearsay evidence to express a biological fable about the coastal intertidal zone at Wuteh on Penghu. In the intertidal zone at Wuteh, the long-term thriving growth of salt-tolerant plants and shellfish, and residents' economic activities and everyday lives, are important biological production mechanisms for the intertidal zone's ecology.
The local women use shovels to dig up many kinds of mollusks in the intertidal zone when the weather is good. This type of laborious but low-income economic activity has long supplemented the local people's protein intake and met their minimum financial needs. The women's oral accounts of their lives and fates provide indispensable evidence of the community's way of life. The salt-tolerant plants see this and continue their growth through quiet change. And the mollusks that live in the briny sand and been coexisting with other species for ages continue their lives.

This project attempt to combine research methods with hypotheses and with hearsay evidence will reveal biological fables involving the coexistence of people and plants in specific areas.

Scene 1: The Fertile Surface of the Earth—Rich Point, Shi Men Village

The Fertile Surface of the Earth—Rich Point, Shi Men Village This work will consist of a plant survey project conducted during the exhibition period. We chose a seaside location at longitude 121°33'37" and latitude 25°17'26", which happens to be at Rich Point in Shi Men Township—the northernmost part of Taiwan—to conduct a belt-shaped collecting survey of coastal plants on the opening day. We will then continue to identify and record plants at the exhibition areas. The landforms along the north coast of Taiwan were formed by the waves, tides, and currents, and by the wind, rain, and weather. These forces have created the area's unique sea-eroded topography and geology. The plants living in this area are able to grow under adverse conditions, which is one reason we selected it for our survey.
We selected plants' reproductive organs—flowers and fruit—as the main parts of our identification model in order to investigate the ecology of plants' reproductive behavior, and also to explore environmental changes and the many activities of people and animals on the land. We will try to realize the coexistence between physical factors and living things, and the constant propagation and development of biological organisms, in the spirit of the exhibition. The life of the works in the exhibition will grow continuously and change

Dialogue between Heterology of Botanical Images

About the Urban Plant Exploration Project --Taipei, we will be residing and conduct a survey of plants grown by families or growing wild by the sides of streets. Apart from studying the dynamics of plant communities and the boundaries between species, I will also indirectly investigate living habits in the city via the relationship between the lives of city residents, including the members of surveyed families, and plants. I will further investigate open urban marginal spaces, people's attitudes towards plants and the way they use them, and differences based on gender, age, and ethnicity.

And the Dialogue between Heterology of Botanical Images, we by the many forms of plant images at the exhibition (drawings, plant specimens, ecological photographs, scanned photos, video, and microscopic images, etc.) will indirectly shed light on how the different ways of producing plant images reflect the changes in the way pictures of knowledge are presented.
